Sabres Fall to UW-Oshkosh, 1-0, On Late Goal

Box Score

OSHKOSH, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – A late goal by host UW-Oshkosh held to the final whistle as Marian University women's soccer fell on the road, 1-0, at JJ Keller Field at Titan Stadium this evening, Sept. 10.

Amanda Baalke found the back of the net as she cleaned up a deflected ball inside the six-yard box in the 70'.  The loss brings the Sabres to 1-3 on the season, while the Titans improve to 2-2 and have yet to allow a regulation goal this season. Their lone two losses have come in overtime to teams ranked in the top-17 according to the NSCAA National Poll.

The match began with rain and quickly changed to frigid, below average temperatures coupled with a stiff breeze strong enough to shift the position of the ball standing stationary on the surface comprised of FieldTurf. UW-Oshkosh outshot Marian 22-9 in the match, but seven of Marian's shots came in the first half with the wind. Laura Maly and Brittany Syms tied for the team lead with two shots each.

In the second half, UW-Oshkosh took advantage of the breeze as it was able to maintain possession for the majority of the 45 minutes, eventually leading to the decisive score from Baalke.

The goal came on a strong offensive surge by the Titans. Kali Jahn sent a ball into Rachel Elliot, who dropped it off for Baalke, who deposited past the outstretched left arm of Caitlyn Rosenberger for the goal. Jahn and Elliot were given assists on the score and for Baalke, it was her second goal of the year.

Rosenberger made seven saves to bring her four-game total to 46 on the year with a solid .885 save percentage.

Nina Muzi and Angela Christensen split time in goal for the Titans with both combining for five saves. Muzi picked up the win to move to 2-2.

The Sabres will head to Augustana (Ill.) this Saturday, Sept. 13, before returning home to face Elmhurst next Wednesday, Sept. 17, in the final non-conference tune-up before conference play begins.
