Sabres Stumble Against Eagles in NACC Home Opener

Box Score

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's soccer team suffered a disappointing setback to visiting Edgewood College, this evening, Sept. 23, as the Eagles scored two unanswered goals in the second half to break a 1-1 tie that propelled them to victory at Smith Field.

A penalty kick gave the Eagles (4-3-1, 2-0-0 NACC) a 1-0 advantage at the end of the first half, but the Sabres (3-5-0, 0-2-0 NACC) responded with Zach Peltonen's second goal of the season in the 66'. Just two minutes later, Edgweood went back in front as Luke Miller's tally proved to be the game-winner. The Eagles would add insurance and improve to 2-0 in conference play.

Edgewood received a fortunate bounce on an aggressive play by Marian goalkeeper Bryce Woldt in the 35'. Woldt came off his line to make a play on a ball about 12 yards away from the net. The ball skipped away from Woldt and towards an Eagle, who then attempted to make a move for a potential shot. That forced a Marian defender to make a desperate play and he was whistled for the foul inside the 18-yard box.

A penalty was awarded and then converted by Evan Rogaczewski for his second goal of the year and it gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead going into halftime.

In the 51', Jeroham Duran saw an opening to the goal and delivered a blast from 35 yards away that was tipped just over the bar by Edgewood goalkeeper Matt Dammen. It was Marian's first opportunity to tie the game in the second half, but wouldn't be there last.

In the 66', Peltonen took a chested pass from Danny Heerhold and unloaded a well-placed shot into the goal to make it 1-1.

Edgewood answered back with Miller's tally in the 68' on a corner kick that wasn't fully cleared out of the Marian box. Miller was the beneficiary as the attempted headed clearance landed right at his feet and he did the rest.

A little over seven minutes later, Henry Simon got into the act with his third goal of the year when he found himself at point-blank range following a through pass from Zander Rothering and put the game out of reach.

The Eagles narrowly one the shot battle, 12-10, and garnered six shots on goal to Marian's five.

The Sabres, needing a win badly, will have their hands full with a road meeting at conference-favorite Dominican University, Saturday, Sept. 27. Start time is set for 2:30 p.m.
