Three Second-Half Goals Propel Eagles Past Sabres

Box Score

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's soccer team saw visiting Edgewood College spoil its NACC home opener as the Eagles scored three answered goals to break a 1-1 tie at halftime en route to a 4-1 victory at Smith Field, this evening, Sept. 24.

Jennifer Daily found the net twice, which included the eventual game-winner in the 56', and propelled the Eagles (6-5-1, 2-0-0 NACC) to their fourth straight victory. The Sabres (3-5-0, 1-1-0 NACC) created several scoring chances that were turned aside by Tori Fortney, who registered 14 saves in the win.

Despite the loss, Marian outshot Edgewood, 18-15, while holding the edge in shots on goal as well, 15-10.

The Sabres started out fast, squaring a couple chances on target in the first 10 minutes courtesy of Leisa Conn.

However, Edgewood was the first to crack the scoreboard after Taylor Pampuch put home a rebound after a Jenna Mineau shot that was saved by Marian goalkeeper Alysha Kallas.

In the 17', it looked as if Brittany Syms might have found the equalizer after shedding a defender and making Fortney dive to her right to make a spectacular save. Six minutes later, Syms broke free again and challenged Fortney into a tip save over the crossbar.

Then finally, in the 31', Laura Maly from the top of the 18-yard box found the ball at her feet and bent it into the upper right corner of the goal to tie the game at 1-1.

Marian nearly took a 2-1 lead into halftime when Mikaila Johnson found Beth Merten in the 37' from 15 yards out and with just the keeper to beat, but her shot went wide left.

Looking to build on their momentum coming out of halftime, the Sabres put the pressure on, controlling possession and putting four shots on target in the first 10 minutes.

But in the 56', Dailey struck for her first goal of the game to give Edgewood a 2-1 lead, putting home a shot far post from the right side of the goal about 10 yards out.

The Eagles weren't done. In the 58', they made a strong push into their offensive zone. Dailey delivered a perfect pass at the feet of Pampuch, who put it home for her second goal of the night to make it 3-1.

Marian had an opportunity to cut the deficit in half when Maisie Floyd made a run down the right side and caught Fortney off her line at the top of the 18-yard box. However, the Edgewood keeper made Floyd adjust and an Eagle position player recovered in time to make the save in front of an empty net.

In the 84', Dailey put the game out of reach. After working her way into the box, she took a few touches and delivered a shot that curled inside the right post for her second goal of the game and sixth of the season.

Marian will look to shake off this loss and get back to its winning ways when it visits Dominican this Saturday, Sept. 27. Game is set for noon in River Forest, Ill.
