Roberts Leads Volleyball Past WLC in Straight Sets

Box Score

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Sophomore Jessica Roberts paced the Marian University women's volleyball team with 16 kills as the Sabres knocked off visiting Wisconsin Lutheran College in straight sets at home, Tuesday night, Sept. 30.

Roberts' match- and season-high 16 kills came on a .400 hitting percentage, which also proved to be a season-high. The Sabres hit .228 as a team and snapped their 8-game losing skid in the process to move to 5-13 overall, 1-1 in the NACC.

Marian held off the Warriors (0-13, 0-3 NACC) in the first set for a 5-point win, hitting over .360 with 17 kills on 36 swings to take a 1-0 lead.

In the second set, WLC was on the brink of tying the match with a 24-21 lead late, but the Sabres stormed back. Michelle Koster, who was solid all night, controlled serve and led Marian back to tie the set at 24-24. Then, with the score tied at 26-all, Emily Drier and Roberts combined for back-to-back kills to send a disappointed Warrior squad down 2-0.

Marian took a 5-1 advantage to start the third set, but WLC didn't go away quietly. The Warriors managed to bring the score back to a 1-point deficit on several occasions, but Roberts and Co. held strong and never trailed in the third set, prevailing on another Roberts kill to close out the set.

It was a solid overall team win as Head Coach Kerri Huebel found a solid rotation and stuck with it for the entire match. Amber Baker finished with a team-high 23 assists, while Drier and Koster chipped in 14 digs apiece. Catelyn Brehm tallied 8 kills on .467 hitting and added 5 digs as well.

The Warriors were led by Haley Feucht's 14 kills, but WLC hit just .154 as a team. Alexis Hafemeister dished out 35 assists, while Megan Wierzbicki registered 21 digs.

The Sabres will aim for a 2-1 start in league play as they play host to Alverno College in a Homecoming Day match-up inside Sadoff Gymnasium, Saturday, Oct. 4, at 11 a.m.
