Late Regent Run Drops the Sabres

Box Score

ROCKFORD, Ill. (SabreAthletics.com) - The Marian University women's basketball team had their third straight conference matchup today, Jan. 10, as they took on the Rockford Regents (3-11, 2-7 NACC). A 26-15 run for the Regents in the final 10 minutes proved to be to much as the Sabres fell 74-64.

Defensively the Sabres (9-5, 5-4 NACC) were able to limit the Regent's three-point shooting as they took only four attempts, but fifty percent from the floor on 27-54 shooting helped balance the attack. The Regents were also assisted by Sabre fouls as the went 19 of 26 from the line.

The Sabres started off hot with three-point shots by Emma Jarvey and Nicole Paulus. The Regents were able to respond offensively with solid shooting from the field to even the Sabres effectiveness beyond the arch. Both offensive approaches were working in the first half as there were 11 lead changes, but it was the Regents who found themselves on top 34-32 at the half.

After a slow start to the second half, the Sabres stuck with what was working in the first. Three straight three-pointers by the Sabres less than halfway through the half showed signs of a momentum shift, but an immediate Regent timeout silenced the momentum.

The Regents were able to regroup from the timeout, and after an Olewinski layup, they scored 10 unanswered to go back on top. The Sabres were unable to respond as the Regents held on to the lead until the end.

Three players scored double-digit points for the Regents led by a game-high 23 points from Amanda Davis on 9-of-13 shooting.

Sarah Olewinski and Lindsay Vogels each scored 12 points for the Sabres to lead the team. The Sabres shot an effective 33 percent from the field, but struggled from the free throw line shooting 5-of-10 on eight Regent fouls.

With the win the Regents even the season series at one. The Sabres look to turn things around next week when they welcome Aurora to Sadoff Gymnasium on Wednesday, Jan. 14. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
