Big Second Half Leads to Rout Over Rockford

Box Score
ROCKFORD, Ill. (SabreAthletics.com) – A big second half propelled the Marian University men's basketball team to a 70-46 victory over host Rockford University and snapped a five-game losing skid in the process inside the Seaver Center, this afternoon, Jan. 10.

Tied at 36-36 at halftime, the Sabres (7-7, 6-3 NACC) outscored the Regents (3-11, 2-7 NACC) 34-10 over the final 20 minutes to secure the win. Sophomore Montrell Hobbs scored 14 points to lead all scorers to go along with five rebounds. Alex Stecker added 11 points, while the Marian bench outscored Rockford 35-12.

The Regents pulled to within 45-43 after a Zach Wallace layup with 12:16 remaining, capping a 5-0 run to keep the game a tight one as it had been throughout. However, over the next 6 minutes, the Sabres would embark on a 16-0 run to take a 61-43 advantage with 6:09 left and would not look back.

The decisive run started with a Carvell Oliver three-pointer and finished with an Alex Stecker triple. Oliver chipped in eight points on 3-for-6 shooting to go along with six rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench. He was 2-for-4 from downtown, contributing to a 7-for-16 (43.8 percent) effort for the Sabres in an efficient day from the outside.

A tie game at halftime, the Sabres shot a blistering 66.7 percent (14-for-21) from the field, including 3-for-5 from three-point range and 5-for-9 from the free throw line. Hobbs scored 12 of his 14 points in the opening stanza on 5-for-7 shooting.

Rockford hung in despite only shooting 44.8 percent (13-for-29) and went 8-for-10 from the charity stripe.

The Sabres return to action Tuesday, Jan. 13, hosting Concordia Wisconsin in a 7 p.m. start inside Sadoff Gymnasium.
