Marian Falls to Benedictine, 74-62, in League Action

Box Score

FOND DU LAC, Wisconsin (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's basketball team led by two points at halftime, but visiting Benedictine University turned in an impressive second-half performance to upset the hosts en route to a 74-62 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference victory inside Sadoff Gymnasium this afternoon.

The Eagles (11-6, 9-3 NACC) overcame a 24-22 halftime deficit to shoot 61.9 percent (13-for-21) in the second half, including 5-for-8 from three-point range and 21-for-24 at the free throw line to take advantage of a foul-ridden final 20 minutes for the Sabres (8-9, 7-5 NACC).

All five Benedictine starters reached double figures with Adam Reynolds leading the way with 15 points on 7-for-10 shooting. Marian's Drew Binversie tied for game-high honors with 15 points to go along with seven rebounds.

With 9:27 remaining in the game, Josh Creed knocked down a three-pointer from the top of the key to cut the deficit to 44-41 and cap an 8-3 run that made it a one-possession game once again.

However, the Eagles would counter with an eight-point spurt and eventually build it up to a 14-point advantage. Free throws would maintain the double-digit lead down the stretch as Benedictine found itself in the double-bonus for the final 8-plus minutes of action.

The Sabres led by two points at halftime despite shooting just 32.1 percent (9-for-28) from the field.

It was a very clean game from start-to-finish as both teams combined for just 17 turnovers with the Sabres committing only seven miscues.

Creed added 13 points for Marian, while Montrell Hobbs chipped in 11 in 34 minutes.

The Sabres will look to rebound Wednesday, Jan. 21, when they play host to Edgewood in their second match-up this season. Edgewood took the first meeting back on Jan. 5, pulling away at the end in a 65-53 win. Wednesday's tip-off is set for 7 p.m. inside Sadoff Gymnasium.
