Sabres Take Down Third Place MSOE in Overtime

Box Score

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Sabreathletics.com) – The Marian University women's basketball team snapped a three-game skid tonight, Jan.20, in overtime fashion at MSOE (12-5, 8-4 NACC). After surrendering a late second half lead the Sabres (10-7, 6-6 NACC) took control in in the extra minutes to come away with a 63-61 win and upset the Raiders.

Sarah Olewinski continued to stay hot offensively for the Sabres, tying a game-high 22 points for her eleventh straight double-digit performance. Defensively, Olewinski was continuously around the boards to limit second-chance opportunities for the Raiders. She finished the night with 10 defensive rebounds to earn her first double-double of the season. Megan Lantz also had a solid night for the Sabres, shooting 62.5 percent to come away with a season-high 17 points.

The Sabres came ready to play, gaining an early lead that they held onto throughout the first half thanks to accurate shooting from the field and selective three-point shooting. The Sabres shot 46.2 percent from the field including 5-of-10 from beyond the arc to go into halftime with a five-point lead.

Shooting became less accurate for the Sabres in the second half, allowing the Raiders to slowly creep back into the game. The Sabres shot 33 percent on 7-of-21 shooting including seven missed three-pointers.

Marly Trier had a solid second half for the Raiders, scoring nine of her 12 points late in the game. With two minutes remaining, Trier knocked down a three-point shot to even the score at 51. After Olewinski put the Sabres back up by two on free-throw shots, the Raiders knocked down two of their own to head to overtime.

Free throw shooting was the key to the Sabres success in overtime. After a Lantz jumper put the Sabres up by one half-way through, the Sabres knocked down six straight free throws to keep the Raiders out of reach and come away with the victory.

With the win the Sabres sit in sixth place in the NACC, one game behind Concordia Chicago. The Sabres will look to continue their winning ways when they head back to Milwaukee on Saturday, Jan.24, to take on Alverno. Tipoff is set for 7 pm.
