Box Score DE PERE, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) -- It was similar results for the Marian University Women's hockey team today, Jan. 24, in the second of three straight games against St. Norbert. Despite increasing their shots on goal, the Sabres were only 42.9 percent effective stopping the power play as they were setback 6-1.
The Sabres outshot the Green Knights 33-31 in the first two periods, but 32 saves by goalie Leigh Grall helped silence the offense. A struggling power play defense by the Sabres allowed three goals in 15 minutes to help the Green Knights take control of the game.
After an even first ten minutes, the Green Knights were the first to strike when Lexie Pyykkonen scored her third goal of the season just over 12 minutes in. A hooking call on Marian's Sarah Bier gave the Green Knights a late period power play opportunity which was taken advantage of by freshman Jessica Sherman to gain a 2-0 lead going into the second period.
Senior, Kristin Skubic, scored her first goal of the season just over three minutes into the period to bring the Sabres within one, but penalties quickly gave control back to the Green Knights. St. Norbert scored two power play goals in a span of 26 seconds, starting with a 3-on-4 and then a 4-on-5 to give them a three goal lead with just over 27 minutes remaining.
Amanda Alexander was roughed up on the night as she continuously played with a disadvantage, but was still able to make 26 saves. After allowing her sixth goal of the night early in the third period, Allie Glazer took over for the Sabres in relief to go 12-of-12.
The Sabres have a week to make adjustments as they travel back to De Pere next Saturday, Jan. 31, for their final meeting with the Green Knights on the year. The puck is set to drop at 4 p.m.
