PAUL, Minnesota (SabreAthletics.com) - The Marian University women's hockey team battled host St. Catherine University for 65 minutes, today, Jan. 3, after neither team was able to find the back of the net, both teams settled for the scoreless draw. The Sabres move their record to to 3-9-1 overall.
It was a duel of the goalies as Amanda Alexander and Abbi White each had the puck covered all day. Alexander saved 37 shots compared to White's 29, including five crucial saves in overtime. With the tie, Alexander moves to 2-6-1 on the year while allowing just under four goals per game.
The Wildcats came out aggressive in the first period, outshooting the Sabres 12-7, but were unable to break the guard of Alexander. Although the Sabres played solid defensively, they were also unable to capitalize against the Wildcat defense.
Marian's leading goal scorers Amanda Waigand and Nina Laurie were kept quiet throughout the game. The pair was held to just six shots and were unable to connect on opportunities.
The Sabres had three power play opportunities in the second period and outshot the Wildcats 12-9, but had trouble capitalizing on the opportunities to keep the game scoreless going into the third.
After each team was shut out for the third straight period, the trend continued into overtime. The Sabres were only able to get off two shots in the extra minutes as the game ended in a scoreless tie.
The Sabres have a week off before they return to action for a weekend series against Hamline University. Game one of the two-game set is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 10, at 8 p.m. and will be played at the Waupun Ice Arena. Game two on Saturday will take place back at the Blue Line Family Ice Center.
