Box Score MEQUON, Wisconsin (SabreAthletics.com) – It was an important series that the Marian University men's hockey team needed to have and they got it with a 4-1 win tonight and series sweep over Concordia University Wisconsin.
Senior Brian Berger registered three points, including his seventh goal of the year, and finished the series with four points as Marian (9-11-1, 5-8-1 NCHA) extended its unbeaten streak to four games. The Sabres took a commanding 3-0 lead before the Falcons (6-15, 2-12 NCHA) finally got on the board. Berger's short-handed goal late in the third period provided the final blow to the hosts.
Junior Warren Carter broke the scoreless tie with 4:36 left in the first. The Brookfield native fought hard to gain the puck and was quickly rewarded with a shot from a tough angle as he wristed it past CUW goalie Jake Hebda.
Leading 1-0 in the second period, Carson Johnstone scored his first career goal and gave the Sabres a lead they would not relinquish. The goal came at the 3:59 mark with assists credited to Ben Morgan and Berger.
At the 11:44 mark, the Falcons gave the Sabres a 5-on-3 power play when Jared Pilet was called for elbowing and sent off with a game misconduct.
Marian took full advantage as Hunter Stewart found the net about a minute later on assists from Jacob Ryd and Berger to make it 3-0, Sabres.
Trammell Lynes ended the shutout at the 4:29 mark in the third period to cut the deficit to 3-1, but Berger tacked on an unassisted short-handed tally with 8:52 left to make it 4-1.
Marian netminder Mike Gudmandson made 28 saves for his fifth win of the year, while Hebda stopped 32 shots in the defeat.
Marian will look to extend its unbeaten streak to five when they kick off a two-game set against Finlandia next Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 7-8. Game one is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start time.
