Box Score DE PERE, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's hockey team came up short in the series finale against St. Norbert, today, Jan.31. A four-goal third period for the Green Knights put the Sabres out of contention as they came away with a 5-1 victory.
The Green Knights had constant control of the puck on the night as they outshot the Sabres 48-24. They were able to get off 19 shots in the first period, but unable to get on the board until a hooking call on Ellie Deans put them on the power play with less than seven minutes remaining in the period. The Sabres were a second away from ending the power play when Emily Chandler put the Green Knights on the board.
The Sabres straightened up their act a bit in the second period and, thanks to only one penalty, they held the Green Knights to just 13 shots on goal. The Green Knights were also called for one penalty in the period, but Marian was unable to take advantage.
Penalties on Marian's Rian Lennon and Lauren Zachwieja almost halfway through the third period put the Green Knights on a 5-on-3 and they took quick advantage. Lauren Roethlisberger scored a minute into the power play to put the Green Knights up by two. St. Norbert's Katie Conlon tacked on another just three minutes later to make it 3-0.
The Sabres were able to get on the board with less than two minutes remaining thanks to a power play goal by Kaitlyn Johnson. In attempts to make a late comeback the Sabres pulled their goalie, but the Green Knights took advantage of the empty net, eventually coming away with a 5-1 win.
After a week of rest, the Sabres return to action next Saturday when they welcome St. Scholastica. The two teams met to open the season when the Saints swept the two-game set. The puck is set to drop at 7 p.m.
