Box Score SHEBOYGAN, Wis. – Karissa Preston and Jaime Anderson each scored and the Marian women's soccer team topped Lakeland 2-1 Wednesday afternoon in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference action at Muskies Soccer Field.
"Overall, I was happy with the win. As a team, we need to start playing with more urgency," MU head coach Jillian Sauer said following the match. "We were moving the ball well and making good runs, but with the remainder of the season we need to focus and work on creating and finishing scoring opportunities."
At 22:10 in the first half Preston received a crossing pass from Alyssa Lennon and used a diving header to beat the Lakeland goalkeeper.
"Karissa Preston's goal was beautiful. She did everything she could to get on the ball," added Sauer.
In the waning moments of the second half Anderson took advantage of a ball-handling blunder by the Lakeland goalkeeper and scored to put the Sabres up 2-0.
"Jaime Anderson had a great game and really demonstrated the way we need to play for 90 minutes," Sauer said. "She plays with her heart."
Marian (5-10-0, 2-5-0 NACC) pressured Lakeland throughout the match and outshot the Muskies 19-8, including a 10-4 margin in the second half.
Lennon led the Sabres with five shots, while Anderson and Nicole Wojahn added three shots each.
Mimi Pulido scored with two minutes remaining to give Lakeland (4-12-0, 1-5-0 NACC) a chance to tie it, but the Marian defense stayed true to preserve the win.
The Sabres, now winners of two NACC contests in a row, return to action Sunday at Northland for a non-conference affair.
