Sabres set season-high kills in win over Benedictine

Box Score

FOND DU LAC, Wis. - The Marian University women's volleyball team improved to 4-6 in NACC play, 6-20 overall, with a four-set victory over Benedictine with set scores of 25-18, 22-25, 25-17, and 25-21. The Sabres were able to set a new season-high with 54 kills to go with a .222 hitting percentage in the win.

"We needed to come out playing fast, and aggressive and we were able to do just that," said head coach Kerri Huebel.  "The big stat of the night for us was having three girls reach double-digit kills and a team hitting percentage of over .200.  It was the perfect time for us to have a match like this with such an important match tomorrow against Aurora."

The Sabres took the first lead of the match in the first set with an 8-2 run that gave MU a 17-9 advantage.  The Eagles managed to cut the lead down to three at 18-15 before the Sabres found their grove again finishing the set with seven of the final 10 points in the set.

Marian opened the match with a .226 hitting percentage behind five kills from Hannah Buntrock.  Buntrock also played well at the net with a pair of assisted blocks in the set, while Morgan Dercks had five digs from the back row.

The second set was a tight affair with nine ties before the Eagles pulled out the set win with four of the last six points.  The Eagles bounced back to hit .306 in the set, but it was Brehm who kept the Sabres in it with six kills.

MU bounced back in the third set and were able to come back from an early 7-3 deficit to win the set.  The Sabres were able to tie the set at 8-8 before sending Emily Dreier to the service line shortly after where Marian gained the lead for good with five consecutive points.  Marian also closed out the set strong with the final four points in the set.

Brehm added six kills in the set, and Jessica Roberts chipped in another five as the Sabres hit .326 in the set.

Marian jumped out to a sizeable 15-6 lead to open the fourth set capped off by a pair of kills from Alexandra Meidl.  The Eagles cut into the deficit bringing the match to a 16-13 MU lead, but couldn't manage to get any closer as the Sabres ended the match with a kill from Buntrock.

Six different Sabres recorded kills in the set, while Amber Baker had six digs.

Catelyn Brehm had a career-night recording 18 kills with only two errors for a hitting percentage of .340.  Roberts added 14 kills in the match, and Buntrock had 11 behind Brehm.  In the back row, Dercks also had a career night with 17 digs, while Katrina Jansen and Baker each had 16.  Baker also produced her third consecutive double-double with 39 assists to go with her 16 digs.

Marian concludes NACC play tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 24 with a noon match-up against Aurora.
