WAUWATOSA/GLENDALE, Wis. – The Marian women's tennis team topped Alverno 5-4 and rushed past Mount Mary 9-0 Saturday afternoon in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference action.
With the pair of victories the Sabres clinched the No. 5 seed in the NACC tournament that's set for the spring season.
"Everyone one has really jelled and really bought into the program," MU head coach Marcus Wiegert said. "From the first day of practice to now, this team has improved and I'm proud of them."
In the morning session at Alverno (8-5, 6-4 NACC) the Sabres went 2-1 in doubles action, while utilizing their depth to post a 3-3 mark in singles.
The No. 1 doubles team of Meg Hartzell and Celeste Degeneffe won a tough match, 9-8. The No. 3 team of Alyssa Ostrowski and Kristin Houle posted an 8-5 win.
Tied at 5-5, it came down to No. 6 singles and Samantha Smits – and she was ready for the challenge. After dropping the first set 6-0, she stormed back and won set two 7-5 and dominated set three 6-0.
In No. 2 singles Alissa Heid won 7-6, 6-2 and in No. 5 singles Degeneffe cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win.
In the afternoon session at Mount Mary (1-11, 1-9 NACC) the Sabres easily took care of business.
In No. 1 singles Hartzell won 6-1, 6-4 and in No. 2 singles Heid cruised to a 4-6, 6-1, 12-10 victory. No. 3 singles saw Andrea Krahenbuhl roll to a 6-3, 6-0 win and in No. 4 singles Melissa Spannbauer dominated 7-6, 6-0.
The Sabres utilized their depth and took care of business in No. 5 and 6 singles.
In No. 5 singles Degeneffe easily won 6-1, 6-0 and in No. 6 singles Smits dominated 6-0, 6-2.
The Sabres were just as dominant in doubles play.
The No. 1 squad of Hartzell and Degeneffee won 8-6 and the No. 2 team of Heid and Elizabeth Elrick dominated 8-1.
In No. 3 doubles the team of Ostrowski and Houle rolled to an 8-o win.
Marian (8-6, 6-4 NACC) will face Wisconsin Lutheran in the first round of the NACC tournament in the spring.
