Box Score MADISON, Wis. – Danny Heerhold delivered a perfect cross from the right side and Gustavo Carmona headed it past the Edgewood goalkeeper and the Marian men's soccer team upended Edgewood 1-0 in overtime Wednesday evening in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference action at Breese Stevens Field.
"One of the things we stressed in practice and in the game was not to allow goals," MU head coach Craig Peltonen said. "You're always in the game if you don't allow goals. We moved some players around and it all jelled together. We battled and played really hard and that's how you win close games like this."
Despite the low score, there were plenty of scoring opportunities.
The Sabres outshot the Eagles 22-11 – including a 10-3 margin in the first half. MU also outshot EC (5-7-0, 2-4-0 NACC) 6-0 in overtime.
"Any time you get the golden goal it's instant gratification," added Peltonen. "I feel that Gustavo (Carmona) deserved the goal. He battled and played hard throughout the night."
The Sabres (8-3-1, 2-2-1 NACC) return to the pitch Saturday against Rockford. Game time is set for noon at Smith Field.
