Sabres skate to tie with No. 5 Adrian

Box Score

FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University men's hockey (2-2-1, 2-2-1 NCHA) held a 3-1 lead in the second period only to have No. 5 Adrian score three unanswered goals to take a 4-3 advantage in the third period.  A late Jake Howie goal, with an assist to Gianni Mangone, with under two minutes remaining forced overtime where neither team could find the back of the net for the 4-4 tie.

Howie scored the opening goal of the game after receiving a pass from Tanner Pagendam in transition and sneaking the puck below the blocker of the Adrian goalie from the left circle.  The goal was Howie's first career score, and ignited the Sabre offense as Nick Monfils netted his first career goal shortly after to give MU a 2-0 lead.  Monfils backhanded the puck through traffic in the slot to light the lamp with Cole McCaig and Scott Smoot earning assists on the play.

The Bulldogs cut the MU lead in half at 2-1 in the final minute of the period to conclude the first period scoring.  Marian was able to outshoot the Bulldogs by a slim 11-10 margin in the opening stanza.

An unassisted goal from Derek Thorogood on a 5-on-3 power play with 12:18 left in the period gave Marian a 3-1 lead, but the Bulldogs answered shortly after with their own 5-on-3 man-advantage goal to send the teams into the second intermission with a 3-2 score.

Adrian then opened the third period with a pair of goals, separated by only 1:33 on the scoreboard to give the Bulldogs their first lead of the game at 4-3.  Howie was then able to even the score with 1:49 left to play after receiving a pass from Mangone and going above the blocker from the left circle, similarly to his first goal.

Marian would outshoot the Bulldogs 3-2 in the overtime period, but neither team could find the back of the net resulting in the 4-4 overtime tie.

The Sabres finished with a 33-29 shots advantage, while Mike Baldwin finished the game with 25 saves on the night.

Mangone finished with a team-high eight shots, while Ben Morgan went 14-20 in the face off circle to lead Marian.

The Sabres finish their two-game series with Adrian tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 14 from Blue Line at 4 p.m.
