Box Score APPLETON, Wis. - Marian University men's hockey (1-2-0, 1-2-0, NCHA) outshot Lawrence 32-23 but a third period Viking goal lifted LU past the Sabres by a 3-2 final.
Lawrence scored twice in the first period to take the early lead with the first goal coming with 10:58 left in the period. The Vikings then scored six seconds into their first power play of the game at the 11:22 mark to take the 2-0 advantage.
The Sabres answered 29 seconds into the second period to cut the deficit in half with a Gianni Mangone power play goal. The goal was Mangone's first score as a Sabre as he was assisted by Derek Thorogood on the play.
Then with 2:25 left in the period James Mathias lit the lamp for his second goal of the year with assists from Jacob Ryd and Thorogood to even the score at 2-2.
MU was able to outshoot the Vikings 11-5 in the third period, but it was an LU goal five minutes into the period that gave Lawrence the Battle of Highway 41 opener.
Both penalty killing units played well with Lawrence only going 1-7 on the power play and the Sabres only managing one goal in eight opportunities with a man-advantage.
Mike Gudmandson made 20 saves on the night with Mangone recording a team-high five shots on goal.
Marian closes out the Battle of Highway 41 hosting Lawrence tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 7 with puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m.
