Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. - The Marian University women's hockey team (2-2-0, 0-1-0 NCHA) fell to Saint Benedict in the finale of the series by a 3-2 final.
Similarly to game one, the Sabres offense started slowly and were outshot in the opening period 12-11. A pair of goals from Elli Marvin of CSB in the first period gave the Blazers an early 2-0 lead.
The Sabres then cut the lead in half late in the second period on the power play. Jessie Meluch and Paige Johnson each put shots on goal to cause a scrum in the crease where Courtney Wittig was able to bury the puck and put the Sabres on the board.
Marian finished the second period with an 18-9 shots advantage.
The scoring would go quiet until there was only 2:46 remaining when the Blazers were able to extend the lead out to 3-1 forcing Marian to pull Maddy Dixon from goal for the extra attacker. Sarah Bier beat the blocker of the Blazer goalie in the final minute to cut the lead to one, but it was all the Sabres could manage leading to the 3-2 final.
Bier and Wittig each had six shots on goal to lead the Sabres, while Jessie Meluch went 17-23 in the face off circle.
Dixon turned away 26 of the 29 shots sent her way and held CSB 0-3 on the power play.
Marian returns to action Tuesday, Nov. 10 when they travel to Concordia Wisconsin for a 7 p.m. puck drop.
