Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. – Nicole Paulus scored a game-high 23 points and was 7-of-10 from behind the arc to lead Marian past Dominican 82-60 Wednesday evening at Sadoff Gymnasium.
Neither team was afraid to play offense as both squads shot the ball a combined 115 times.
"Both teams shot the 3-pointer often in the first half and we had to make adjustments in the second half to slow their offense down," MU head coach Bill Peters said following the game. "We really controlled the boards in the second half and didn't turn the ball over and that made a huge difference."
Paulus hit a 3-pointer at 4:16 in the first quarter to give Marian a 10-9 lead that it wouldn't relinquish. Lindsay Vogels and Brandi Bender also hit trey balls and the Sabres led 18-11 after one quarter of play.
The Stars (1-5, 1-1 NACC) fought back in the second quarter, but the Sabres entered halftime with a 42-37 advantage.
Marian opened the third quarter with four trey balls in a row and led 63-49 after three quarters of action.
As a team the Sabres shot 48 percent (14-of-29) from beyond the arc. However, the most telling stat came from the free-throw line as MU went 14-of-15.
Bender helped out with 15 points and handed out four assists. Hunter Godfroy came off the bench and scored 12 points.
The Sabres found success in the paint and outscored the Stars 22-12. The Marian defense also came to play and forced 14 turnovers, which the Sabres turned into 18 points.
