Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. - In a penalty riddled game, the Marian University women's hockey team (3-8-0, 0-6-0 NCHA) fell to Adrian by a 5-2 final to conclude the season series against the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs opened with three goals to start the game before Courtney Wittig netted her sixth goal of the season to put the score at 3-1. Wittig, fresh out of the penalty box took a break out pass from Sarah Bier and was turned away with her first shot on the 1-on-1 situation but put her own rebound in with only 12 seconds left in the period.
Adrian re-extended their lead out to three with a goal in the second period, but the Sabres answered with a Jill Schneider goal at the half way mark of the third period. Schneider took a pass from the right circle and found herself with an open net in the slot for her fourth score of the season. Alexis Peterson and Rian Lennon assisted the goal that put the score at 4-2.
A power play goal from Adrian nearly five minutes later sealed the game, however, with the 5-2 final.
Each team committed 12 penalties in the game with Marian going 0-10 on the power play, and Adrian going 2-11 with a man-advantage.
Lindsey Strainis made 30 saves in the crease for the Sabres, while Wittig, Bier, and Peterson each had three shots to lead MU.
The Sabres close out the first half of the season hosting St. Scholastica Wednesday, Dec. 9 with a 7 p.m. puck drop.
