Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wisconsin (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's basketball team was denied a chance at a Senior Night win after visiting Lakeland College sunk two free throws with six-tenths of a second remaining to secure a 69-67 victory inside Sadoff Gymnasium tonight.
In a tie game with 10.6 seconds remaining, the Sabres (12-11, 8-10 NACC) came out of a timeout looking to win the game, but a Marian turnover would lead to a controversial loose-ball foul and Lakeland's (9-14, 8-10 NACC) Bailey Grayvold converted both free throw attempts to spoil Senior Night for three Marian seniors.
Prior to the game, Sarah Olewinski, Amelia Mirsberger and Kelsey Moore were honored for their tremendous dedication and service to the program.
Olewinski finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds and four assists in the loss. Nicole Paulus led all scorers with 17 points on 6-for-7 shooting, including 4-for-4 from long distance, while Mirsberger added 10 points and four rebounds.
Marian trailed 37-32 at halftime as Lakeland went on an 6-0 spurt to close out the opening frame.
Kayla Clark and Grayvold led the Muskies with 14 points, while Maddy Doll and Rachel Stankevich turned in 12 and 11 points, respectively. Lakeland accounted for 38 points in the paint, outscoring the Sabres by a margin of 24 points.
The Sabres fall into a tie with Lakeland for seventh place in the league standings, but would receive the eighth and final seed in the NACC tournament if the regular season ended today due to the tie-breaking procedure.
The Sabres take on Concordia Chicago (13-10, 10-8 NACC) and Concordia Wisconsin (17-6, 13-5 NACC) on the road to close out the regular season and need to stave off Aurora (7-16, 7-11 NACC), which sits just a game back in the league standings and on the outside looking for a NACC tournament spot.
Marian and CUC are scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 14, at 2 p.m. in River Forest, Illinois.
