Sabres Outmatched by the Bulldogs

Box Score

ADRIAN, Mich. (SabreAthletics.Com) – The Marian University women's hockey team headed to Adrian, Mich., tonight, to take on the NCHA leading Adrian Bull Dogs. The Bulldogs took control of the first two periods to secure control and come away with a 5-1 win over the Sabres.

Adrian outshot the Sabres 46-28 on the afternoon, but their attack was kept relatively under control by Marian's Amanda Alexander. Alexander made 41 saves in the outing as she provided impressive play to help keep the game close for the Sabres.

The Sabres offensive attack increased as the game went on, but started off slow due to the play of the Bulldogs. After getting off only 15 shots in the first two periods combined, the Sabres were able to rally off thirteen in the final period and connect once.

Scoring didn't start for the Bulldogs until late in the first period. Marian was on the power play thanks to a check from behind by Sydney Smith, but it did not stop the Bulldog's success. Adrian's Lexie Tzafaroglou and Kristin Lewicki were able to set up an opportunity with seconds remaining in the period as Lewicki capitalized and put the Bulldogs up by one.

The second period opened up more scoring chances for the Bulldogs, which they took advantage of. Junior, Logan Taylor, put Adrian up by two less than three minutes into the period on a connection started by Lewicki. Sydney Smith added a second goal of the period for the Bulldogs on the power play with just over one minute remaining.

Amanda Waigand put the Sabres on the board just over halfway into the third, hooking up with fellow seniors, Kristin Skubic and Brittany Syms. The goal was Waigand's 20th of the season as she has already broken the record for most goals in a season, 18, which she set last year.

The Bulldogs were able to answer the goal with two of their own to run away with the win. Goalie, Jade Walsh, increased her record to 19-1-4, while she leads the NCHA in save percentage and goals allowed average. Alexander fell to 4-12-2 on the season.

One game remains for the Sabres in the regular season as they head to Lake Forest tomorrow, February, 21. The puck is set to drop at 2 p.m.
