Box Score MILWAUKEE, Wis. (SabreAthletics.Com) – The Marian University men's hockey team was in Milwaukee today to finish their NCHA Quarterfinal series against the MSOE Raiders. The Sabres were able to come away with a 4-2 victory in game two, which forced a 20 minute mini-game that would decide the series. Each team scored two goals in the mini game to force sudden death overtime that was finished seven minutes in when James Ring scored for the Raiders to end an exciting day of hockey and the Sabres' season.
Both teams were able to clean up their act from yesterday's game, which consisted of 15 penalties and ten power play opportunities combined. The Sabres committed one penalty in game 2, which played a large part in their success in the outing. The Raiders were called for three penalties and allowed one power play goal.
Brian Berger had another impressive day for the Sabres as he finished with his second hat trick in three games. He was able to get the Sabres' offense started early when he finished off a pass from Hunter Stewart eight and a half minutes into the game.
MSOE was quick to retaliate when freshman, James Ring, evened the score at one just over a minute later. At the end of the period, the score remained tied at one.
Berger put the Sabres back on top early in the second when he hooked up with Ben Morgan to score his second goal of the game. Once again the Raiders were able to provide a quick response. Kevin LoGiudice evened the score at two less than a minute later with his third goal of the season.
The Sabres regained the lead five minutes later when Berger and Stewart found their second connection of the night to earn Berger the hat trick. The pair continued to work well together as they each gained an assist early in the third period when Mark Whitely gave the Sabres a two-goal lead.
Mike Baldwin made 25 saves in the game and was able to keep the Raiders scoreless in the third period. Nick Kohn was able to make 26 saves within the night.
The win for the Sabres tied the series at one and forced the mini-game.
The Sabres started the mini-game where they left off in game two. Ben Morgan gave the Sabres the lead over a minute into play. Hunter Stewart continued to be a part of the action as he earned his fourth assist of the night.
MSOE tied the game with a power play goal from LoGiudice for his second goal of the day. The Sabres scored a power play goal five minutes later. It was a five-on-three for the Sabres, and after returning to a normal power play, Brodie Jamieson found RJay Berra who finished the deal to put the Sabres up by one.
With less than two minutes remaining in the period MSOE's Clint Garris was able to save their season with the game-tying goal, ultimately leading the Raiders to a win in overtime which ended the Sabres season.
The team said goodbye to six seniors who competed in their final game as a Sabre, Thomas Nosella, Ian Harvey, Matt Williams, Aaron Leonard, Brian Berger and RJay Berra. These six men have made a difference in the Marian community throughout the last four years, and on the ice as Sabres. They will be greatly missed next season.
The Sabres have the majority of their team returning next season and they will look to continue to have success under Head Coach AJ Aitken.
