Box Score LAKE FOREST, Ill. (SabreAthletics.Com) – The Marian University women's hockey team finished their regular season today with an NCHA road match-up against Lake Forest. The Sabres allowed five un-answered goals in the final two periods as the Foresters came away with a 6-1 win.
Offensive success started early for both sides, but it was the Foresters who were the first to strike. Lake Forest junior, Morgan Pope, put the Foresters on the board three minutes into play with her sixth goal of the season.
The Sabres were quick to respond. Sabre sophomore, Emily Everson, evened the game at one with her fourth goal of the season one minute later. Action slowed down for the remainder of the period as the game stayed tied going into the second.
Within five minutes into the period, a power play opportunity for Lake Forest helped pick up the pace of the Forester offense. It was Pope, once again, who was able to capitalize as she scored her second goal of the game to give the Foresters the lead. Seniors, Laura Reckdenwald and Marissa Weber, added two more goals for the Foresters late in the period as they gained a three-goal lead going into the third.
The Sabres have had a knack of turning on the pressure in the third period throughout the season, but that was not the story today. The Sabres were outshot 11-8 in the period as the Foresters scored twice to finish the Sabres off 6-1.
The Foresters controlled the puck for most of the game and were able to get off 43 shots compared to 23 for the Sabres. Penalties were relatively even for both teams as the Sabres served 10 minutes on five infractions and the Foresters 12 minutes on six.
Maddy Dixon got her first start of the season at net for the Sabres. The sophomore compiled 37 saves on the contest. Lake Forest's, Allie Carter, earned the win at net for the Foresters as she made 22 saves on the day.
The Sabres will head to De Pere, Wis. on Friday, Feb. 27, to face off against St. Norbert in the NCHA Quarterfinals. The Sabres went 0-3 against the Green Knights in three-straight match-ups to finish off the month of January. Game time has yet to be determined.
