Box Score FOND DU LAC Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's hockey team hosted St. Scholastica in an NCHA match-up for their final meeting against the Saints on the season. The Sabres scored three goals in the second period but were unable to stop St. Scholastica's offense late as they fell 7-4.
The Sabres had a tough time stopping the Saints on the power play as they allowed three goals with the skater advantage on the night. Amanda Waigand scored a power play goal of her own en-route to a hat trick for the Sabres.
It was Waigand who got the scoring started five minutes into the game with an unassisted goal. The Saints answered when Sierra Honowski scored the team's first power play goal of the night just under two minutes later. The Saints tacked on two more in the period to lead 3-1 after one.
Waigand was at it again early in the second when she finished off a play from Brittany Syms and Paige Picard on the power play to put the Sabres within one. Nina Laurie evened the score at three when she scored her eleventh goal of the season just over two minutes later.
Hanowski was able to put the Saints back on top on a power play opportunity with her second goal of the night shortly after. The Saints had a second power play opportunity just two minutes later in which the Saints capitalized on when Abby Sawyer also scored her second of the night.
Waigand's third goal finished off the second period to put the Sabres back within one when she hooked up with Lauren Zachwieja and Kaitlyn Johnson.
Sawyer shot a hat trick of her own, with her third goal coming slightly over seven minutes into the third to give the Saints a two goal lead. In the final minutes, Nina Waidacher sealed the deal with an empty net goal in the final minute.
The Sabres look to rebound when the host Finlandia tomorrow at 3 pm.
