Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.Com) – The Marian University women's hockey team finished their season series against the Finlandia Lions, today, Feb. 8, at the Blue Line Family Ice Center. A strong first period by the Sabres took the Lions out of contention early as they came away with a 4-0 win.
Power play performance played a large role in the Sabres (6-14-1) success on the night. The Sabres were able to take advantage of the skater advantage twice, while Amanda Alexander held the Lions scoreless in three power play opportunities.
Amanda Waigand picked up where she left off yesterday, and was almost able to score her second hat trick in-a-row. Less than four minutes into the game Waigand put the Sabres on the board on a power play opportunity as she finished off passes from Brittany Syms and Sarah Bier.
Later in the period it was Bier's job to score as she finished off a pass from Waigand to put the Sabres on top by two. Waigand was able to increase the lead to three just under two minutes later with her second power play goal of the period.
Alexander was lights out on the night and denied any chance of a Lion comeback. She saved all 24 shots that came her way to earn her third shutout of the season. The shutout and the win each set Sabre records for most in a season by a goalie.
Shortly into the third period, the Sabres added one more goal when Nina Laurie scored her twelfth goal of the season to seal the win.
The win provides the Sabres with their best record in team history. Head coach Jamie Kivi has broken the record in each of her three seasons since joining the team in 2012.
The Sabres look to continue their momentum when they host a two game series against Concordia Wisconsin starting on Friday, Feb. 13. The puck is set to drop at 7 p.m.
