Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich. (SabreAthletics.Com) – The Marian University softball team finished off the Finlandia Dome Tournament matched up against the UW-Oshkosh Titans. The Sabres found themselves behind early and were unable to recover as they fell 11-3 to end the tournament at 1-3.
The Sabres came away scoreless in the top of the first inning, and the Titans were quick to capitalize. With one on and one out, Titan's, Katie Koepsel and Lindsey Luedke, hit back-to-back home runs to put them on top 3-0. The Titans tacked on one more in the second to increase their lead to four.
Marian's, Emily Gorges, put the Sabres on the board in the top of the third inning with an RBI single that scored Tana VandenHuevel. With two runners on base, Marian's Gabby D'Oronzo, flied out to right to end the inning.
The Titan's responded with four runs in the bottom of the third to gain an 8-1 lead. Both Luedke and Caitlin Hoerning hit home runs in the inning.
VandenHuevel cut the lead to five in the top of the fourth with a two-run double to left, but the scoring stopped there for the Sabres as they ended up falling by eight.
Shannon Huray got the start for the Sabres and pitched two and two-thirds innings, allowing six earned runs. Emily Gorges pitched over an inning in relief and allowed five earned.
The two-through-four hitters for the Lions, Hayden Krueger, Koepsel and Luedke, had a successful day at the plate as they finished the day with eight hits and eight RBI's. Luedke had two home runs on the day, while Koepsel hit one.
Titan's starting pitcher, Sara Brunlieb, earned a win as she went four and two-thirds innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out four.
The Sabres have twelve days of rest before returning to action against Baldwin and Wallace on Friday, March 13, in Tucson, Arizona, for the team's spring trip. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
