FOND DU LAC, Wis. -- The Marian softball team played in their home and Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener against the Dominican Stars.

The Stars showed to be a strong team at the plate as they swept the series, winning 14-8 and 7-3.

The Sabres were effective at the start of game one.

After holding the Stars scoreless in the first inning, Emily Gorges added herself some insurance runs with a three-run blast that brought home Tiffany Castillo and Tana VandenHeuvel to put the Sabres up 3-0.

The bats continued to have success for the Sabres in the bottom of the second.

After loading the bases with no outs, Sara Terrian and Heather Dorn recorded an RBI off a fielder's choice and sacrifice fly to put the Sabres up 5-0.

Dominican's offense answered throughout the next two innings to gain a 7-5 advantage.

In the top of the third, second baseman Marissa Burns put the Stars on the board with a two RBI single.

In the top of the fourth the Stars' offense did its damage.

After the first two runners reached base, Allie Evans cut the lead to two with an RBI single.

Burns brought home her third run of the game and reached first on an error. The next batter, Alyssa Domico, cleared the bases with a bases-loaded triple.

It was a similar result for the Sabres in game two against the Stars.

Marian jumped out to an early lead in the first inning as, Gorges, once again, put the Sabres on the board with a two-run home run.

Starting pitcher, Shannon Hurray, got off a hot start as she threw four scoreless innings. She found herself in trouble in the fifth inning.

Evans put the Stars on board as she reached base on an error, en route to a three-run inning.

The Stars tacked on three more runs in the fifth to put the Stars (13-2, 2-0 NACC) on top by four and secure a lead that they held onto as they eventually came away with a 7-3 win.

The Sabres (5-11, 0-2 NACC) were scheduled to play Concordia Chicago, tomorrow, March 29, but the games have been postponed due to weather. The next scheduled games for the Sabres are on Thursday, April 2, at UW-Eau Claire. Action starts at 3 p.m.
