Box Score 2 MEQUON, Wis. - The Marian softball team threatened to snap the Concordia Wisconsin Falcons unbeaten Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference streak, but fell just shy of stealing a road upset in double-header action Saturday afternoon. The Sabres were setback 14-5 in game one and 5-4 in game two.
Marian had a strong fourth inning in game two.
Nicole LaBeck got things started for the Sabres with a one-out double. Gabby D'Oronzo put the Sabres on the board with two outs in the inning as she scored LaBeck from second on an RBI double.
Kaitlyn Johnson reached base on an error to keep the inning alive and set up Tana VandenHeuvel with two runners on and two outs.
The 5-foot-6 junior increased the Sabre lead to 4-0 as she hit a long-shot to deep left center for her first home run of the year.
Shannon Huray was dealing for the Sabres and started with four scoreless innings, but found herself in trouble in the bottom of the fifth.
The Falcons scored two quick runs and were threatening with two runners on and one out in the inning, which ended the day for Huray.
Emily Gorges came on in relief in an attempt to get the Sabres (9-19) out of the jam, but it wasn't before back-to-back RBIs tied the game at four.
The game remained tied at in the bottom of the seventh, when Falcon utility player, Andrea Thiry tripled to put a runner on third with one out. The next batter, Nicole Bublitz ended the game with a RBI sac fly to preserve the Falcons (19-7) undefeated conference record.
The Sabres return home Sunday, April 12, as they look to rekindle to their winning ways against the Alverno Inferno. Game times are set for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
