FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Marian softball team turned up its offensive intensity in game two of a double-header against Concordia Chicago to split a pair of Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference games at Smith Fields.
The Sabres dropped the opener 7-2, but answered with a 7-1 win to finish the night.
"In the first game we cracked a little bit defensively. In the second game we made plays," Marian head coach Tony Draves said. "The Cougars are pretty good in the top of their order and I thought we handled them much better in the second game. Shannon Huray pitched a great game which helped alleviate the pressure."
Huray threw her strongest outing of the season. In game two she went the distance, while not allowing an earned run and striking out four, to earn her second win of the season.
With the game tied at one in the bottom of the third, Emily Gorges put the Sabres on top as she scored both Tiffani Castillo and Rachel Andres with an RBI single up the middle. She later came into score when Nicole LaBeck reached on an error to put the Sabres up 4-1.
Gorges continued to provide her fellow pitcher support in the bottom of the fourth.
Marian had runners on first and second when Gorges singled to left to earn her third RBI of the night. The Sabres (6-12, 1-3 NACC) scored one more run later in the inning when Heather Dorn drew a bases-loaded walk.
Dorn knocked in her second RBI in the bottom of the sixth with a single up the middle to put the score at 7-1.
The Sabres return to action tomorrow when they head to Eau Claire for a double-header against the Blugolds. Game one is set to start at 3 p.m.
