Box Score 2 FOND DU LAC, Wis. – It was Senior Day for the Marian softball team on Saturday, April 25 as the Sabres played host to the Rockford Regents for their final games of the 2015 season at Smith Field. The Sabres won game one 2-1 with a wild walk-off finish and then picked up the offense in game two to come away with a 14-6 win and cap off the day.
"We got off to a slow start offensively in game one and got a little tight because we weren't very relaxed in the box," Head Marian softball coach Tony Draves said. "We caught a break in that game to come away with the win, but in game two we had some timely hits that got our team to relax."
"It's an age old saying that hitting is contagious and it certainly is. We were pretty good one through nine as the bottom of the order stepped up in both of our games," Draves added. "It was a good team effort and a good way to complete our season at home."
It was an exciting finish for the Sabres in game one as Jess Meluch came into to score the winning run from third due to a balk called on Rockford's starter, Sarah Moritz.
Charlotte Pegram scored the team's first run in the bottom of the second as she tripled and scored teammate Ashley Lobraco.
Shannon Huray was lights out from the circle for the Sabres. She pitched all seven innings, struck out four and did not allow an earned run as she came away with her fourth win of the season.
Game two was an offensive showdown.
The Sabres scored six runs in the bottom of the third as Sara Terrian, Ashley Lobraco and Emily Gorges each earned RBIs in the inning.
The Sabres were up 9-6 in the bottom of the sixth when they had their second offensive outburst of the game.
Sophomore infielder Nicole Labeck started the scoring in the sixth with an RBI single to center with the bases-loaded to score Heather Dorn from third. After Tana VandenHeuvel knocked in Gabby D'Oronzo with the team's second-straight RBI single, Gorges tripled to center to clear the bases an earn an eight-run win in six innings.
"I wanted to pick up the team, and myself, after a slow offensive performance in the first game," Gorges said. "We showed our true colors in the second game. We picked up our bats and our defense and we all came together."
Sophomore utility player Rachel Andres had the start for the Sabres in game two. She came away with a no-decision after going three innings and allowing four earned runs.
Huray came on in relief and allowed just one earned run to pick up her second win of the day and fifth of the year.
The Sabres (12-24, 6-14 NACC) head to Milwaukee on Monday, April 27 to complete a series against the Milwaukee School of Engineering that was started on Friday, April 24, but was postponed because of rain. The Sabres currently have a 17-7 lead going into the bottom of the ninth inning of game one, and will proceed to game two after the completion of that game. The action starts at 4 p.m.
