Box Score MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The Marian softball team resumed play on Monday, April 27 against the Milwaukee School of Engineering after the series got postponed due to rain near the end of game one on Friday, April 24. The Sabres secured a 17-8 win in game one after returning to action in the bottom of the ninth with a ten-run lead and earned the series sweep with a 9-7 win in their second-straight extra innings dual.
"We showed composure, hung in there and found a way to win in extras," Head coach Tony Draves. "It was a very fitting way to end the season and I was very pleased. We had great pitching and timely hitting. It was a great win and we can sit with our heads held high after playing some great softball down the stretch to finish the year on a five-game winning streak."
The Sabres started the scoring in game two with three runs in the top of the fourth.
The bases were loaded with two outs in the inning when utility player, Rachel Andres hit a bases clearing triple.
Errors plagued the Raiders in the top of the fifth as they allowed three unearned runs to increase the Sabre lead to six.
The MSOE bats came to life over the next three innings and were able to score six runs of their own to bring the game to extras.
Sophomore Nicole LaBeck put the Sabres back on top in the top of the eighth with an RBI sacrafrice fly which sparked a three-run inning to give the Sabres a healthy lead going into the bottom of the eighth.
The Raiders threatened in the top of the eighth and had the tying runner at the plate with two outs, but Huray was able to get out of the jam and earn the win.
It was a rainy night on Friday, but that didn't stop the Sabre bats from having a field day.
After a slow start that had the game tied at one going into the top of the eighth, the Sabre bats erupted for six runs.
Sophomore Gabby D'Oronzo gave the Sabres a one-run lead when she walked with the bases loaded. After the Raider's recorded one out on a fielder's choice, the Sabres scored five runs in a row, thanks to three singles and a walk to take a six-run lead.
It looked as if the Sabres were going to come away with the win after eight, but the Raider's answered with six runs of their own to bring on a ninth inning of action.
Sloppy play by the Raiders allowed the Sabres to score 10 runs in the top of the ninth, despite only acquiring three hits.
The game was called in the bottom of the ninth as the weather was too wild to play in, however, after resuming play with a 10-run lead on Monday, the Sabres sealed the deal and came away with a 17-8 win.
Shannon Huray earned her fifth win of the season for the Sabres after pitching the final inning and a third. Huray later picked up her sixth win after going eight innings in game two and allowing five earned runs.
The series sweep for the Sabres (14-24, 8-14 NACC), wraps up the 2015 season as the team finished ninth place in the conference. Marian will look to rebound in Draves's second season at the helm as the majority of the team looks to return next year.
