FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Marian women's tennis team started its season off on the right foot with a 5-4 team win over Ripon.
Freshman Alissa Heid rallied back in singles action to win the third set (3-6, 6-3, 10-2), which ultimately decided the match.
The Sabres were also dominant in doubles action and swept the Red Hawks 3-0.
The No. 1 team of Heid and Elizabeth Elrick won 9-7. Meg Hartzell and Celeste Degeneffe raced to an 8-2 victory and Kristin Houle and Samantha Smits dominated in a 8-0 win.
"We had a great start to the match with each of our three doubles teams attaining victories," MU head coach Marcus Wiegert said. "It was a great way for these three sets of freshmen to begin their college tennis careers."
Freshman Andrea Krahenbuhl also picked up a win (6-2, 6-4) in singles action.
"I was pleased with Alissa and Andrea in singles," added Wiegert said. "They both played well and got off to a great start. Overall, we did a good job."
The Sabres return to action Saturday for a 10 a.m. match against Dominican.
