Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Marian men's soccer team scored three second-half goals en route to a 4-2 victory over Lawrence Tuesday evening in non-conference action at Smith Field.
With 10 minutes remaining in the second half Alonso Fragoso fed Zach Peltonen a perfect ball and the Fond du Lac native drilled home the game-winner. In the waning moments of the game Fragoso netted his 11th goal – and Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference leading – of the season to put the game out of reach.
Fragoso scored twice and added two assists and had a part in each goal.
"Alonso is very calm, collected and deceptive on the ball. He gets you going one way and then he'll go the other way," MU head coach Craig Peltonen said following the win. "When Alonso is on his game he can find the back of the net consistently. He can also set people up and is dangerous to defend."
Less than two minutes into the first half Fragoso darted down the far sideline and fired a shot past the goalkeeper to momentarily give the Sabres the lead.
15 minutes later LU (1-5-1) tied it at 1-1 and the game was knotted at the break.
At 57:22 Fragoso fed Israel Tovar an entry pass and he beat the goalkeeper one-on-one to break the tie.
However, moments later LU scored to tie it at 2-all.
Peltonen is pleased with the Blue and White's chemistry.
"This is the best start we've had in a while and you can look at statistics and say that Alonso, Zach and Jeroham are scoring goals, but this has been a total team effort," he said. "It's not always the guys on the field, but it's the guys who are practicing hard and the unselfish nature this team shares pleases me."
The Sabres (7-1) return to action Friday for their first road NACC contest versus Aurora.
