Box Score MILWAUKEE – After a six-day break, Marian volleyball (2-11, 1-2 NACC) hit the court against MSOE in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference action. The match turned into a five set thriller that saw the Sabres take the final set 15-13 to earn their first conference win of the season.
Marian was able to jump out to a quick 11-5 lead to open the match before MSOE answered with a 7-3 run to bring the set to a 14-12 MU lead. The Sabres then extended their lead and used a kill from Amber Baker and a pair of aces courtesy of Katrina Jansen to put the set away at 25-16.
The Sabres would finish the set with a hitting percentage of .235, while also holding the Red Raiders to an .073 hitting percentage.
The second set was tight with 17 ties up to a 20-20 stand still. The Red Raiders went on a quick 3-0 run to take a late lead and eventually held on for the 25-22 set win.
The third set played similarly to a 12-11 Marian lead before the Sabres scored seven consecutive points to take the first sizeable lead at 19-11. MSOE was able to put up a fight before Marian closed out the set at 25-19 soring four of the final five points.
The fourth set was all Red Raiders finishing with a 25-8 score to force a winner take all fifth set.
The final set played to a 10-10 draw when MSOE took a 13-11 lead forcing a Marian timeout. The timeout proved to be just the momentum shift needed as the Sabres scored the final four points of the match capped off by a kill from Baker to set the final at 15-13.
Catelyn Brehm led the offense with a team-high 11 kills with Jansen finishing the match with a match-high 26 digs. Baker was able to produce her third consecutive double-double with 29 assists and 16 digs to go with five kills and a .571 hitting percentage.
The Sabres travel to the NACC-IIAC Crossover Challenge this weekend Sept. 25-26 in Dubuque, Iowa.
