Box Score 2 LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Marian University women's volleyball team (0-5, 0-0 NACC) concluded the Forester Invitational but were swept by Greenville College (25-23, 25-20, 25-18) and Lake Forest College (25-21, 25-23, 25-14).
The Sabres were able to take the first sizeable lead in the opener against Greenville when they used a 5-0 run to lead 17-10 in the first set. The Panthers were able to answer, however, as they scored 12 of the next 14 points to take their first lead of the set at 22-19. Marian was able to rally late and bring the set to a 23-23 draw but Greenville was able to finish the set with two consecutive points at 25-23.
The beginning of the second set went back and forth before Greenville scored eight straight to take the first marginal lead at 16-8. Marian was able to bounce back scoring five of the next five points and fending off two set points, but it wasn't enough as the Panthers took the set 25-20.
The Panthers would then be able to secure the match win scoring nine of the final 14 points in the third set and holding Marian to a hitting percentage of -.026.
Junior outside hitter Jessica Roberts recorded 10 kills to lead the Sabres and added two aces from the service line.
In the second match of the day against host Lake Forest, the Sabres played tight with the Foresters in the opening sets. Marian held the lead in the first set at 14-13 before Lake Forest scored six of the next eight points to take a 19-16 advantage, which was just enough as they went on to take the set at 25-21.
Similarly, the second set opened with Lake Forest holding a slim lead at 15-12. The Sabres then were able to use a 10-2 run to take the lead at 22-17 with sophomore middle blocker Elizabeth Zuelke producing three kills. The Foresters held off the momentum shift and finished the set scoring eight of the final nine points to set the final at 25-23. Lake Forest used the momentum from the conclusion of the second set and were able to cruise to a 25-14 win in set three.
Junior outside hitter Catelyn Brehm had a team-high nine kills against Lake Forest, while junior libero Emily Dreier had a game-high 19 digs.
Marian returns to action traveling to Lawrence Wednesday, Sept. 9 for a 7 p.m. non-conference tilt. The Sabres then finish the week at the UW-Oshkosh tournament Sept. 11-12.
