Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. - A pair of power play goals accompanied with a short-handed goal helped lead UWSP past the Marian University women's hockey team (3-11-0, 0-7-0 NCHA) with a final of 3-2.
After a scoreless opening period, the Pointers would take the first lead of the game with a power play goal followed by a short-handed goal separated by just under four minutes. The Sabres cut into the deficit just before the end of the period with Courtney Wittig scoring her eight goal of the season, second tally of the series. Rian Lennon and Alexis Peterson assisted the play as Marian faced a 2-1 deficit heading into the final period.
The Pointers then added to their lead as Cara Lemirande went coast to coast on the power play for her fifth goal of the year. Rian Lennon had the equalizer, however, as the Marian power play broke through for a goal at the 6:55 mark.
UWSP would manage to hold off a late push with the Sabre goal empty in the final 1:32 for the series sweep with a 3-2 win.
The Sabres were outshot 33-24 for the game, 16-7 in the second period, and the power play was only 1-8 in the contest.
A day after holding the Pointers scoreless, Ali Glazer got the start in goal for MU and had another solid outing with 30 saves on 33 shots sent her way.
Marian next hits the road as they return to NCHA play with a pair of games at Finlandia Jan. 15-16. Game one puck drop is set for 6:15 p.m. (CST) with the finale at 1 p.m. (CST) the following day.
