Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. – Marian University women's hockey (5-12-0, 2-8-0 NCHA) outshot the Concordia Wisconsin Falcons but a pair of late empty net goals led CUW to a 5-1 win over the Sabres.
Marian started the game well with an 11-7 shots advantage in the opening period but it was Falcon goals at the 10:30 mark and inside the final minute of the first period that led CUW to an early 2-0 lead.
The Sabres continued to pressure the Falcons but CUW converted on a power play for their second man-advantage score of the game at the 15:42 mark. The Falcons nearly added to the 3-0 lead with less than three minutes remaining putting the puck in the back of the net but the goal was later waved off. The no goal served as a spark plug for Marian as 45 seconds later Alexis Peterson lit the lamp from in front of the crease for her second goal on the year to bring the score to 3-1. Emily Everson assisted the score as MU once again outshot Concordia in the second period by an 11-9 advantage.
Marian wouldn't be able to cut into the 3-1 deficit in the third period, however, and a pair of empty net goals in the final two minutes brought the final score to 5-1.
Peterson, Jessie Meluch, and Courtney Wittig each had five shots on goal to lead the Sabres, while Lindsey Strainis made 13 saves in 37:01 of action and Ali Glazer held the Falcons scoreless on six shots in her 21:03 in net.
Marian takes the weekend off before a weekend trip to Duluth, Minn. for a pair of road games at St. Scholastica Jan. 29-30.
