WAUWATOSA, Wis. – It's safe to say the Marian University women's tennis team has Wisconsin Lutheran's number, at least for now.
In a rematch of last season's NACC quarterfinals, which the Sabres came away victorious, the Warriors were clearly overmatched as MU cruised to an 8-1 win. With the victory the Blue and White improve to 4-2 in the conference and with the fall season coming to a close this weekend, the Sabres control their destiny as they attempt to qualify for the conference tournament for the second season in a row.
"Tonight was a good conference win for us," MU head coach Marcus Wiegert said. "Doubles went extremely well and our No. 3 doubles team bounced back after being down 5-2. We faced adversity and didn't get rattled."
As Wiegert alluded to, the Sabres started the match well in double play.
Meg Hartzell and Celeste Degeneffe (No. 1 doubles) commanded an 8-2 victory, while Mackenzie Meyers and Alissa Heid (No. 2 doubles) were just as dominant, also earning an 8-2 win. Kristin Houle and Alyssa Ostrowski (No. 3 doubles) closed out doubles action with an 8-6 come-from-behind-win.
The Sabres continued to dominate in singles action.
Hartzell (No. 1 singles) eased to a 6-0, 7-6 victory and Meyers (No. 2 singles) was dominant, 6-2, 6-3. Andrea Krahenbuhl (No. 4 singles) continued her recent hot streak and won 6-4, 6-3. Degeneffe (No. 5 singles) eased to a 7-5, 6-2 win and Melissa Spannbauer (No. 6 singles) scraped her way to a 7-5, 6-4 victory.
The Sabres are at MSOE tomorrow and this Saturday travel to Madison and will compete against Edgewood and Concordia Chicago.
