FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Marian University men's soccer team rallied late in the second half but a hit goalpost and missed opportunities stopped the Sabres' advance and Edgewood walked out with a 3-1 victory.
At 80:26 in the second half Muhammed Abshir deflected a shot past the EC (6-6, 3-3 NACC) goalkeeper and the Blue and White were within striking distance. Just minutes later Abshir connected on a line drive from 30 yards out, but it hit the nearside goalpost.
The Eagles scored three goals in the first 50 minutes, including goals right before and after intermission.
Abshir led the Sabres with two shots on goal, while Ramon Sutherland, Eric Rodriguez and Jose Luis Alvarado each recorded a shot attempt.
At 15:42 in the first half Rodriguez nearly tied the match on a penalty kick, but was rebuffed by the EC goalkeeper. After the miss the rebound went directly to the feet of Rodriguez, however he sailed the shot above the crossbar and nearly tied the match a second time.
MU (4-6, 2-3 NACC) go on a brief two-game road swing at Rockford and Lakeland and return home Oct. 15 vs. UW-Whitewater.
