MILWAUKEE, Wis. – For the second season in a row the Marian University women's tennis team will enjoy postseason competition.
The Sabres won their third-straight match and dispatched MSOE 8-1 Wednesday afternoon to punch their ticket to the 2016-17 NACC women's tennis tournament.
For head coach Marcus Wiegert, qualifying for the conference tournament is always a No. 1 priority, but he wants to see more consistency as the Sabres complete the fall portion of their schedule.
"Tonight was not the best tennis we have played this year, but we continued to fight and finished strong," Wiegert said. "Alissa Heid, Andrea Krahenbuhl and Kristin Houle all played very solid in singles play. Qualifying for the conference tournament is always our first goal. Now we have some more work to do moving forward."
The Sabres were dominant in singles action. Meg Hartzell (No. 1 singles) fought to a 7-5, 7-5 victory and Mackenzie Meyers (No. 2 singles) won via default. Heid (No. 3 singles) rolled 6-0, 6-1 and Krahenbuhl (No. 4 singles) seized a 6-0, 6-1 victory.
Melissa Spannbauer (No. 5 singles) won 6-4, 6-4 and Kristin Houle (No. 6 singles) dominated 6-3, 6-0.
In doubles play Heid and Meyers (No. 2 doubles) won 8-6 and the team of Houle and Alyssa Ostrowski (No. 3 doubles) fought to an 8-6 victory.
The Sabres complete their fall season this weekend with matches vs. Concordia Chicago and Edgewood, both of which are to be played in Madison.
