Marian offense dominates in win at Finlandia

Box Score

HANCOCK, Mich. - The Marian University women's hockey team (2-3, 2-2 NCHA) returned to .500 in conference play with a convincing 6-2 road win at Finlandia.

The scoring was opened by a Sabre rookie when freshman Hannah Koniar gave Marian a 1-0 lead at the 7:30 mark of the first period with her first career goal.  The Sabres were able to jump out to a fast start outshooting Finlandia 14-8 in the opening stanza.

Finlandia would bounce back in the second period but it was the Sabres who were able to extend on their lead.  Sophomore Alexis Peterson lit the lamp without an assist for her first goal of the season at the 14:32 mark and then a little under three minutes later sophomore Hailey Miller netted her team-high fourth goal of the season with an assist to senior Paige Picard.

Freshman Ally Fox became the fourth different Sabre to score when she found the back of the net 2:40 into the third period for her second goal of the season.  The Fox goal was assisted by senior Rian Lennon and gave the Sabres a commanding 4-0 lead.

The Lions would stop any thoughts of a shutout with a goal nearly 10-minutes later, but once again the Sabre offense was able to score quickly to re-extend the lead.  Lennon would score a pair of goals just 2:36 apart near the end of the third period with senior Amanda Siiro, junior Paige Johnson and sophomore Sheila Blower all recording assists.

In the final 22 seconds Finlandia would sneak in another goal to set the final score at 6-2.

The Sabres finished with a 36-23 shots advantage in the win including a 13-5 advantage in the third period.  Senior Maddy Dixon earned her second career win in goal for MU making 21 saves.  Lennon's three-point third period helped lead the offense, while fellow senior Emily Everson had an on-ice rating of +4 in the victory.

Marian next hits the ice at St. Scholastica Tuesday, Nov. 22 with a 7 p.m. puck drop.
