Sabres down Lawrence on Military Appreciation Night

Box Score

FOND DU LAC, Wis. - In another penalty riddled game, Marian University men's hockey (1-2-0, 1-2-0 NCHA) tallied their first win of the season over Lawrence with a 5-2 final on the fourth annual Military Appreciation Night.

Lawrence created a turnover and put themselves on the board just 50-seconds into the game and quickly put MU down 1-0.  Marian answered quickly, however, scoring three goals in a span of 2:02.  Junior Derek Thorogood opened the scoring at the 3:08 mark with assists to sophomore Gianni Mangone and junior Hunter Stewart

Thorogood then lit the lamp for the second time in the game on the power play with assists this time from Mangone and senior Scott Milnthorp.  Newcomer junior Braden Crone followed with just under 15-minutes in the period with his first goal as a Sabre.  Mangone once again earned an assist along with senior Brodie Jamieson on what proved to be the game-winner.

The Vikings answered at the midway point in the opening period with their lone power-play goal of the night to cut the lead to one.

With three assists on the night already, Mangone then lit the lamp for his first time of the season on the power play in the second period with a slap shot from the point, assists by senior Derek Perl and Jamieson.

Another newcomer lit the lamp to close out the Marian scoring at the beginning of the third period in freshman Clay Cross.  Cross' first NCAA goal was assisted by seniors Cole McCaig and Travis Meyer.

Each team tallied 13 penalties on the night with the Marian power play going 2-10 and the Lawrence power play scoring one goal on 10 opportunities.  The Sabres outshot the Vikings in all three periods finishing the game with a 24-16 advantage.

Junior Mike Gudmandson (1-1-0) earned his first win of the season in goal stopping 14 of the 16 Viking shots sent his way.

Marian closes out the Battle of 41 with a 7 p.m. puck drop at Lawrence tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 5.
