Box Score APPLETON, Wis. - Marian University men's hockey (1-3-0, 1-3-0 NCHA) outshot Lawrence 39-22 but a pair of odd-man rushes was enough for the Vikings to down MU 2-1.
Lawrence was unable to create many quality opportunities, but when they did they were able to capitalize. The Vikings would score at the 4:58 mark of the first period and the 16:57 mark of the second period and led 2-0 after two periods despite being outshot 28-14.
The Sabres would finally strike 1:18 into the third period when senior Derek Perl sent a bouncing puck from the high slot that went five-hole past the Lawrence goalie to cut the deficit to one. Sophomore Gianni Mangone assisted the goal, his fourth assist of the series, along with junior Derek Thorogood.
The Marian offense continued to pressure Lawrence with quality chance after quality chance but wouldn't be able to sneak one into the back of the net to set the final at 2-1.
The game totaled 89 penalty minutes with the Sabre power play unit going 0-10.
Senior Mike Baldwin (0-2-0) took the tough-luck loss in net for the Sabres stopping 20 of the 22 shots sent his way.
The offensive struggles on both sides continued in the shootout that ensued following the game to determine the owner of the Battle of 41 trophy. Junior Hunter Stewart would be the only Sabre to score in the shootout as Marian was defeated also by a 2-1 score in eight rounds.
Marian hits the road next weekend traveling to Adrian Friday, Nov. 11 for a 6:05 p.m. (CST) puck drop.
