Box Score DUBUQUE, Iowa - Marian men's volleyball (8-5, 4-2 MCVL) was led by Aaron Wendels and Jon Smallpage as the Sabres were able to cruise past Loras for a road victory with final set scores of 22-25, 25-21, 25-18, and 25-20.
In the first set Loras was able to hit .235 with 14 kills and also hold Marian to a .100 hitting percentage but the rest of the match was all Sabres. MU started fast in a bounce back second as they scored nine of the first 12 points and finished the set with a 4-1 run. The Sabres hit .429 in the match with 16 kills to only four errors.
Loras opened with an 11-9 lead in the third set before the Sabres went on a 10-1 run to take a commanding 19-12 advantage. MU also finished the set with four of the final five points as the defense held the Duhawks to a -.034 hitting percentage in the set.
Marian took an early 12-6 lead in the fourth set, forcing a Loras timeout, and held that advantage the remainder of the set to end the match in four sets.
Wendels had a match-high 18 kills with a .268 hitting percentage, while Smallpage was right behind him with 17 kills and a .278 hitting percentage. Libero Cullen Liberski had a match-high 13 digs to lead the Sabre back row, while Joey Dittman had a double-double with 42 assists and 11 digs. Wendels was also able to complete a double-double with 11 digs to go with his 18 kills.
Marian returns to action tomorrow with an MCVL match against North Central (Ill.) at 2 p.m. followed by a 4 p.m. non-conference match against Cardinal Stritch.
