Box Score 2 MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Marian University softball team split a doubleheader Sunday at Alverno. The Sabres dropped game one 2-1 and powered back in game two and dismantled the Inferno 12-5.
To start game two AC (11-19, 4-10 NACC) jumped out to a 3-1 first-inning lead, however, MU battled back in its part of the second inning behind a pair of freshmen. Rachel Soch doubled to left field to plate two runs and Lindsey Strainis singled to center field and pushed across a pair of runs. In the top of the fourth Gabby D'Oronzo notched an RBI single and MU led 6-3.
The Inferno rallied in the third and fourth innings to cut their deficit to one at 6-5.
MU retaliated in its part of the fifth. Cassidy Thiede doubled to left field to push across a run and Lindsey Vogels scored on a passed ball to give the Blue and White an 8-4 lead.
The Sabres broke the game open in the top of the sixth. Emily Gorges drilled a two-run home run to left field and Tana Vanden Heuvel later scored on an error. Taylor Gerlach capped the scoring with an RBI single to center field.
Soch batted 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Strainis finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Gerlach hit 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Shannon Huray (9-4) earned the win from the circle. She tossed a complete game and allowed seven hits, five runs and no walks and fanned three.
MU (18-10, 7-5 NACC) struggled to find a groove on offense in the game one setback.
The Blue and White left six batters on base and committed three errors.
The Sabres scored their run in the top of the fifth when D'Oronzo recorded an RBI single to left field.
MU returns to action Wednesday at Lakeland.
