Box Score 2 SHEBOYGEN, Wis. – Mistakes and errors got the best of the Marian University softball team and the Sabres dropped a doubleheader, 8-7 (9 Inn.) and 7-3 at Lakeland Wednesday afternoon.
The MU offense, which has been ranked in the top 10 nationally in runs scored this season, jumped out to a quick lead to start game one.
Junior Nicole LaBeck kicked off the scoring in the top of the first with a single up the middle to score a pair of runs. Senior Emily Gorges, who made the start in the circle, helped her own cause with a RBI single in the top of the second to give the Sabres a 3-0 advantage.
However, LC countered with four runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning and the Muskies lead 4-3.
After a scoreless third inning the Sabres' offense got to work in the top of the fourth.
Tana Vanden Heuvel, LaBeck and Taylor Gerlach added RBIs as the Sabres reclaimed a 6-4 lead. MU added another run in the top of the sixth, however, LC scored runs late to tie the game at 7-7 and force extras.
The Muskies (16-12, 8-6 NACC) scored on an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth to closeout the game.
In the back end of the doubleheader MU (18-12, 7-7 NACC) received RBIs from Lindsey Strainis and Gorges and MU led 2-0 after four complete innings of play.
LC fought back with four runs in the fifth and three in the sixth inning and MU was unable to play catch-up.
The Sabres look to gain traction in the conference standings with four games slated this weekend at Smith Field.
