Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Marian University softball team completed its 2016 campaign with a doubleheader sweep over Edgewood, 2-0 and 3-2, Saturday afternoon on Senior Day. The Sabres finish their season with 22 victories, the most since 2008.
"Feel great for this group of seniors," MU head coach Tony Draves said following the game. "We have a pretty young team and we relied on this senior class. Gabby D'Oronzo is a vocal leader, Tana Vanden Heuvel lead by example, Emily Gorges let her play do the talking and Lindsay Vogels, who played basketball the previous four years came over and gave softball a try and proved to be very beneficial to the younger players in the program."
In game one it was Gorges who slammed the door shut on Edgewood's offense. She tossed a complete game and allowed three hits, one walk and didn't allow a run. She also fanned 11 batters. Gorges finishes her career with 415 strikeouts, which ranks second all-time in the Sabre record books.
Gorges helped her own cause in the bottom of the first inning and reached on a fielder's choice, but scored Lindsay Strainis. Rachel Soch added an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth.
The backend of the doubleheader was a low-scoring affair as well.
Edgewood (14-26, 6-16 NACC) scored in the top of the third, but the Sabres (22-18, 11-11 NACC) responded in its half of the inning.
Gorges drilled a two-run home run to straightaway center field to give the Sabres a 3-1 lead. It was Gorges ninth home run of the season, which is tied for most home runs in a single season. D'Oronzo later scored on an error to cap the scoring.
Shannon Huray earned the win in the circle. She tossed five and one-third innings and allowed seven hits, two runs (both unearned) and walked three and fanned five.
