MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The No. 5 seed Marian University women's tennis team outlasted No. 3-seeded Wisconsin Lutheran 5-3 in the first round of the 2016 NACC Women's Tennis Tournament.
"A great day for Marian tennis!" MU head coach Marcus Wiegert said. "Our third appearance in the conference tournament and our first win in NACC tournament play. We got off to a great start with number two and number three doubles winning. Our singles play was solid and Alissa Heid got off to a quick start, which gave everyone else confidence."
Meg Hartzell (No. 1 singles) eased to a 6-4, 6-2 victory. Heid (No. 2 singles) started strong, but was unable to finish her match against WLC (10-6, 6-4 NACC) due to the match already being decided.
Celeste Degeneffe (No. 5 singles) won a three-set thriller, 6-1, (2-6), 6-2 and Samantha Smits (No. 6 singles) walked away with a convincing 6-4, 6-3 victory.
The tandem of Kristin Houle and Alyssa Ostrowski (No. 3 doubles) won 8-4 and Elizabeth Elrick and Heid (No. 2 doubles) won 8-4.
Hartzell and Degeneffe (No. 1 doubles) narrowly missed out on the doubles sweep and lost 8-6.
MU (10-8, 6-4 NACC) advances to the conference semi-finals and will travel to No. 2 seed Edgewood Sunday, May 8 at 9 a.m.
